Nicotine residues in eggs and egg products |
Nicotine is an alkaloid found naturally in the nightshade family of plants (Solanaceae), such as tobacco with biosynthesis taking place in the roots. Nicotine is a plant self-defense, a potent nerve poison and is included in many Insecticides. In former times pure synthetic nicotine was used as a pesticide. Because of its high toxicity the utilization is forbidden since the seventies.

The authority labs of "Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit (LAVES)" has found nicotine in 23 of 25 samples. In an actual study of the BfR, there is no indication of medical hazard found in eggs or egg products.
The "LAVES" objects to food if the concentration exceeds 2,5 µg/kg. Following the "Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelverordnung", eggs and egg products must not contain nicotine.
