Malachite green (MG) has recently gained interest in the field of Official control of residues in edible products due to the frequent occurrence of residues of this suspected carcinogenic compound in salmon tissue.

| Uses of Malachite Green |
Malachite green is a traditional agent used in aquaculture to treat and prevent fungal infections and other diseases. The use of MG in worldwide aquaculture probably continues because of low cost, ready availability and high efficacy.

| Toxicological Assessment |
Malachite green is not approved for use by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). MG is related structurally to other carcinogenic triphenylmethane dyes (gentian violet and pararosaniline). For this reason, the U.S. FDA nominated MG as a priority chemical for carcinogenicity testing under the National Toxicity Program in 1993.

As malachite green is not listed as a veterinary medicine under Annexes I, II or III of Council Regulation 2377/90/EC its administration for that purpose is not permitted in aquaculture.
Nevertheless it is widely used because it is comparatively cheap, easily available and highly efficient.
In 2003 the European Commission decided that the MRPL (minimum required performance limit) of malachite green and leucomalachite green is 2 µg/kg.
